The game starts with a grid of 10 or 20 picture cells from the selected topic. Teams take it in turns to specify a picture number then name or describe that picture in the target language. If the class decides the language was acceptable, the team can click on the picture to claim that cell.

When a team gets 4 of its symbol in a row either vertically, horizontally or diagonally, they win that round. The language (speech and text) for a picture is available by clicking on the question mark. Points are awarded manually by the teacher or class.

How to use Four in a row to teach English

Four in a row game to teach english

  1. Teams take it in turns to choose a cell and name the picture in it in English.
  2. If correct, click on the picture to claim the cell.
  3. If wrong, or you can't name a picture, the next team clicks on its symbol (right of screen).
  4. When a team achieves four in a row the game is won - you can then choose to play again, or play a different game, etc.

Only click on a picture cell once a student or team has both indicated the number of the cell targeted and correctly named the picture in that cell. Once a cell has been claimed by a team, it cannot be reverted to its picture in that round. Pictures are distributed randomly each time the game is played.

Select the topic you would like to use by clicking the 'Change topic' button.

Select whether to use on-screen help buttons while playing the game.
Four options are available:

  • No help switches off the help button: it does not appear on the game page.
  • Text only will show the English label for the topic selected when clicked.
  • Speech only will play the English talk file for the selected topic when clicked.
  • Text and speech will both show the English text and play the speech file.

The help buttons appear on the game page as a question mark in the corner of each picture.

The game can be played with 2,3 or 4 teams.

In this game scores are added manually by the teacher or by the teacher in conjunction with the class. You could, for example, award points for all correct answers, or only for getting four in a row.
